New plush carpet installed in an upstairs bedroom of a two-story home in Arlington, TX

Carpet installation in Arlington, TX still makes the most sense in bedrooms, upstairs game rooms and on stairs, where softness and sound control count for more than spill resistance. When carpet ripples a year after it goes in, or a seam shows every time the afternoon light hits it, the cause is almost always how it was installed rather than the carpet itself.

We install wall-to-wall carpet in Arlington homes and nearby Mansfield, Kennedale and Grand Prairie, including the two-story houses where carpet covers the entire second floor. Every job is power-stretched to the Carpet and Rug Institute's CRI 105 residential standard, and your quote lists carpet, cushion, removal, stairs and floor prep separately.

What's Included in Our Carpet Installation

Your written estimate covers each of these steps:

  • Measure and seam diagram. We show you where every seam will fall before the carpet is ordered.
  • Samples of fiber, pile style and cushion, viewed in the rooms they are going into.
  • Removal and haul-off of old carpet, pad and staples (see old flooring removal).
  • Floor check. We scrape high spots, address loose plywood on stair landings and replace damaged tack strip.
  • New cushion that meets the carpet maker's warranty requirements for thickness and density.
  • Power-stretching to CRI 105, using a power stretcher across each room rather than a knee kicker alone.
  • Seaming with seam tape and edge sealer, with seams kept out of doorways and main walking paths where the room allows.
  • Transitions, door clearance and cleanup: metal or wood edges at hard floors, a check that doors still swing freely, then a final vacuum.

Signs Your Carpet Needs Replacing

Ripples alone do not always mean replacement. Carpet that is otherwise in good shape can often be re-stretched (see floor repair). New carpet makes sense when you see:

  • Traffic lanes that stay matted after a professional cleaning, especially at the top of the stairs and in hallways.
  • Pet odor that returns, which usually means urine has soaked through into the cushion.
  • Pad that crunches or crumbles underfoot, or seams that have split and frayed.
  • Stains and sun fading that cleaning will not lift.
  • A change in how a room is used, like turning a guest room into a nursery or a game room into a home office.

Our Carpet Installation Process

  1. Measure and plan seams. We measure each room, check pile direction and draw the seam layout.
  2. Choose carpet and cushion. Fiber, pile and cushion are matched to traffic, pets and budget, then priced.
  3. Tear out and prep. Old carpet and pad come up, staples are pulled and the floor is cleaned. Tack strip is set with a small gap from the wall.
  4. Lay cushion. Pad seams are taped, and on concrete the pad is glued in place so it cannot shift.
  5. Seam and stretch. Seams are joined and sealed, then the carpet is power-stretched tight and hooked onto the tack strip.
  6. Trim and finish. Edges are tucked at the baseboard, transitions are installed and we vacuum and walk every room with you.

Carpet Options: Fiber, Pile Style and Cushion

Fiber decides how well carpet resists crushing and stains. Pile style decides how it looks and how much it shows footprints.

FiberStrengthsBest fit
NylonThe most resilient synthetic, bounces back from crushingStairs, hallways and game rooms
Polyester (PET)Soft, colorfast and resistant to water-based stains, but crushes soonerBedrooms and lower-traffic rooms on a budget
TriextaSoft with built-in stain resistance and better crush recovery than polyesterFamily rooms and homes with pets
WoolNatural fiber, resilient and rich looking, at a higher priceFormal rooms and primary bedrooms

Pile styles: plush or Saxony cut pile is smooth and formal but shows footprints. Textured cut pile hides them. Frieze has long twisted yarns that mask dirt. Loop and Berber styles wear well, but pet claws can snag them. Cushion: bonded urethane (rebond) is the common choice, frothed foam and rubber are denser upgrades, and moisture-barrier pads help keep pet accidents out of the cushion. A thicker pad is not automatically better, because a pad that is too soft lets carpet flex and ripple.

What Affects the Cost of Carpet Installation

These factors make up your quote:

  • Carpet: fiber, face weight and style.
  • Cushion type and density.
  • Room shape and seams. Odd-shaped rooms and patterned carpet create more waste.
  • Stairs. Every step is cut and wrapped by hand (see stair flooring installation).
  • Removal of old carpet and pad, or glued-down carpet that has to be scraped.
  • Floor prep, such as grinding slab ridges or re-securing subfloor.
  • Furniture that has to be moved out and back in.

Carpet in Arlington and Mansfield Two-Story Homes

Many two-story homes in Southwest Arlington, near Tierra Verde, and in Mansfield carry carpet through the whole upstairs: three or four bedrooms, a landing, a full staircase and a big game room over the garage or living room. Those game rooms are often wider than a standard 12-foot carpet roll, so seam placement gets decided at the measure, away from the doorway and the path to the TV. Long, wide rooms are also where carpet that was only knee-kicked ripples first. Upstairs carpet also softens footfall noise in the rooms below, so a good cushion pays off twice.

Why choose us

Why Arlington Homeowners Choose Us for Carpet

CRI 105

Carpet and Rug Institute residential standard

Power-Stretched, Not Just Kicked In

A knee kicker hooks carpet onto the tack strip near the wall, but it cannot pull a large room tight. Without power-stretching, carpet loosens as it relaxes under foot traffic and humidity, and ripples follow. We install to the CRI 105 standard, which calls for power-stretching wall-to-wall carpet. It takes more time and the right tool, and it is the main reason a carpet still lies flat years later.

12 ft

standard carpet roll width

Seams Planned Before We Order

Broadloom carpet usually comes in 12-foot-wide rolls, so any room wider than that needs a seam. Where it goes matters. We draw the seam layout at the measure, keep seams out of doorways and heavy paths when the room allows, run them toward the main light so they show less and seal the edges so they do not fray. You see the plan before the carpet is cut.

Green Label Plus

CRI low-VOC certification for carpet

Lower-Emission Carpet and Cushion

New carpet has a smell for a reason: it releases volatile organic compounds as it airs out. The Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label Plus program certifies carpet and adhesives that meet its low-VOC limits, and the Green Label program does the same for cushion. If anyone in the house is sensitive to odors or dust, we can show you certified products and plan ventilation for the first few days.

FAQ

Carpet Installation FAQ

Why does carpet ripple, and how do you prevent it?

Ripples usually mean the carpet was not stretched tight enough when it went in, so it loosened with foot traffic and humidity. A cushion that is too thick or soft makes it worse. We power-stretch every room to the CRI 105 standard and use cushion that meets the carpet maker's specs.

Which carpet fiber is best for kids and pets?

Nylon is the most resilient and holds up best on stairs and in busy rooms. Triexta is softer and has built-in stain resistance, which helps with pet accidents. Avoid loop or Berber styles if your pets scratch at the carpet, because claws can snag and pull the loops.

Is carpet a bad choice if someone in the house has allergies?

It depends on the person and their doctor's advice. Carpet holds dust in the pile until it is vacuumed, so a good vacuum and a regular schedule matter. If you choose carpet, we can show you Green Label Plus certified carpet and Green Label cushion, along with lower pile styles that are easier to clean.

What is the difference between waterfall and wrapped stairs?

On a waterfall stair, the carpet runs over the nose of each step and drops straight down to the next tread. On a wrapped, or upholstered, stair, the carpet is tucked tightly under each nose so the shape of the step shows. Wrapped stairs look more tailored and take more labor.
